Comments on Comparing Vietnam to Iraq In both wars, U.S. politicians engaged in serial lying to obtain support for the invasion of countries that were no threat to the United States. In Vietnam, the argument was used that the Vietnamese should not have the right to choose the communist form of government. Today, communist governments, including China, are funding much of the horrendous national debt piled up by U.S. politicians. And Vietnam is a major trading partner to the United States. So much for the communist argument that has funded the U.S. military and industrial complex for the past 50 years. In Vietnam, the lies by U.S. politicians as the United States invaded that country made possible (a) the deaths of over 58,000 American GIs; (b) the mutilation and maiming of thousands of other GIs; (c) the deaths of an estimated 3 million Vietnamese, including the estimated 40,000 Vietnamese murdered under the CIA's Phoenix program. In Vietnam, the United States had to flee in order to prevent even great loss of American life. In Vietnam, due to a more stable society, the country recovered into a stable communist society. In Iraq, the lies by U. S. politicians to "justify" the invasion of Iraq has already resulted in (a) an estimated 600,000 Iraqis, including children and babies, being killed; (b) destruction of entire cities; (c) destabilization of one of the most stable and anti-terrorist countries in the Middle East (with due recognition of Saddam Hussein cruelty to those who threatened to destabilized his regime); (d) deaths of over 2,000 American GIs and the maiming of thousands of other GIs, all of whom will be shortly forgotten; (e) the unprecedented growth of people throughout the world wanting to kill Americans; (f) worldwide lack of respect, and hatred, for Americans; (g) costs that are estimated, at this time, to exceed 1 trillion dollars, sufficient to bring the United States into a depression far worse than during the 1930s, with major civil unrest, bankruptcy of the Social Security system, and possible general collapse of the U.S. economy. But in Iraq, as shown by its prior history of warfare between the various tribes, and as it now occurring, the various ethnic, religious, and tribal groups are murdering each other, using such barbaric methods as torture and beheadings. The stable society brought about by Saddam Hussein iron-fisted control no longer exists, and the country is reverting to the period before Saddam Hussein seized control. After destabilizing the country, U. S. politicians are now chastising the Iraqis for not getting their act together. How quaint! Remember how the members of both houses of Congress jumped to their feet and clapped with every sentence and partial sentence uttered by President Bush during the state of the union address and his proposal to invade Iraq. Now, these same sordid members of Congress are blaming the Iraqis for not engaging in peaceful dialogue!
