<body> Amateur Terrorist Attack on Northwest Airlines Flight 253 　 Northwest Airlines Flight 253, an Airbus A330, with Delta Airlines markings, departed Amsterdam on December 25, 2009, for a nonstop flight to Detroit. Boarding the flight at Amsterdam, along with 277 other passengers, after arriving on a flight from Lagos, Nigeria, was Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (Abdul Mudallad), an Algerian, the son of a wealthy Nigerian banker. He boarded the flight with the intention to detonate a PETN explosive device sewed into his underwear and bring about the destruction of the aircraft. As former federal airline safety inspector, Rodney Stich had written several years ago in earlier editions of Unfriendly Skies: 20th & 21st Centuries, how PETN explosive material could easily be embedded into carry-on luggage, checked baggage, or sewn into clothing. PETN, in order to explode, requires either an explosive detonator, or the injection of a special liquid chemical into it. PETN explosives are commonly used in mining and other industries. The Nigerian on Northwest Airlines Flight 253 carried a syringe to inject a chemical liquid into the PETN powder (pentaerythritol tetranitrate) to cause an explosion. Neither the PETN nor the syringe were detected during security checks at Lagos, Nigeria or at Amsterdam. Shortly before landing at Detroit, the Nigerian sought to explode the PETN by injecting a liquid into it. Due to fabrication of the explosive substances, instead of the massive explosion that was intended, a series of small popping explosions, like firecrackers, occurred, and then ignited, without exploding. The attempts to bring down an aircraft with a PETN explosive embedded in his shoes also failed in the case of Richard Reid, known as the "shoe bomber." Their amateur attempts to bring down the airliners was reflected by trying to bring about the explosion while sitting in the cabin surrounded by passengers rather than then in the privacy of the lavatory. Evidence of Amateur Status of U.S. Political Anti-Terrorism Appointees There were several opportunities to have prevented the Nigerian from boarding the Northwest aircraft, but was not taken. For instance: The Nigerian's father, Alhaji Umaru Abdulmutallab (Mutallab), was so concerned about the radical statements of his son that he had gone to the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria and reported to CIA and other U.S. personnel that his son had become radicalized and became a danger to the United States. At about the same time, intelligence had learned that a Nigerian was being prepared to explode a bomb on a U.S. airliner. That information caused the United States to place the Nigerian's name on a watch list, without cancelling his visa to enter the United States, and without putting him on a no-fly list. Other red flags were not acted upon: The Nigerian, Mudallad, purchased his one-way ticket on Northwest Airlines with cash. He provided no contact information. He traveled overseas without any baggage, all of which were traits triggering further investigation. The Nigerian Bomber Abdulmustallab was the well-educated son of a wealthy Nigerian banker. He had shown no violent tendencies. But like many other educated terrorists, he hated the harm associated with U.S. actions. These included, for instance: The invasion of Iraq with the thousands of killed Iraqis. The invasion of Afghanistan, with the thousands of innocent Afghans killed by carpet bombings and missile strikes. The arming and support of Israel and its deadly brutality against people in the land it invaded and occupied since 1967. Naïveté of Homeland Security Department Head: "The System Worked." During a briefing after the failed explosion of the bomb, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, stated that the system worked. Another example of placing incompetent people in key positions−standard political appointments that resulted in needless tragedies: as in FEMA during Hurricane Katrina and a long line of political appointees to the FAA, with tragic consequences. In testimony to the Senate Homeland Security Committee (December 9, 2009), FBI's Timothy Healy, the head of the terrorist screening center, stated that the success of its operation was due to the "superb collaborative efforts of the intelligence community. President Barack Obama's Lambasting Of U.S. Intelligence Personnel During a televised news conference (January 5, 2010) President Barack Obama stated: This was not a failure to collect intelligence. It was a failure to integrate and understand the intelligence that we already had. This was a screw-up that could have been disastrous. However, Obama ignored the warnings that former federal airline safety inspector had sent to him several months earlier about serious problems with aviation security. The Transportation Security Agency (TSA), originally organized in the U.S. Department of Transportation, but later moved to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on November 25, 2002, was responsible for security in all modes of transportation. There are four different data bases for suspected terrorists, and the Nigerian was kept at the lowest risk status. U.S. officials from four different U.S. agencies were made aware of the information on the Nigerian prior to his boarding of Flight 253. In use at the airports were metal detectors to detect anything metal on a person's body, and x-ray examination of carry-on baggage. Only a small part of the checked baggage is examined (and when it is, there is heavy theft by baggage checkers, suggesting that they themselves are a potential source for placing explosives on an airliner). Body scanners are slowly being installed at airports that use radio waves to provide a detailed image of the human body, which can detect items carried under or in clothes being worn. Also being deployed are backscatter x-ray machines that use low-intensity beams that highlight organic material like explosives and drugs. U.S. Unwillingness to Recognize Why Americans are Hated So Strongly Throughout the World, Especially in the Middle East and Africa It obviously took a powerful hatred for the Nigerian to be willing to end his life doing harm to U. S. interests. He had a financially secure life, well educated, and not aggressive or hostile. During the 1950s, when former federal agent Rodney Stich was an airline captain flying Muslim pilgrims from throughout the Middle East and Africa to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, he found a friendly reception wherever he went. But this changed. Al Qaeda and other terrorists repeatedly state the reasons for their hatred of the United States, and reported by Middle East experts: Invasion of Transjordan by Israel in 1967, the brutality by Israel against the people in the occupied territory, and the arming and support by U.S. politicians for this brutality. The CIA-engineered revolution in 1953, by which Mossadegh was overthrown and replaced by the Shah. Stich was in Iran when the revolution started. The repeatedly meddling in Middle East affairs by the United States. The U.S. invasion of Iraq (on the basis of serial lying by U.S. politicians). The U.S. invasion of Afghanistan following the 9/11 hijackings, on the basis that among the various countries in which al Qaeda conducted operations, an al Qaeda cell existed in the mountainous area of Afghanistan. Paradoxically, more people in the United States had a far greater role in enabling the success of the hijackers than did the obnoxious religious fanatical Taliban government. There is no way that the United States can protect itself from the overwhelming numbers of people willing to kill themselves while killing Americans. Numerous Prior FAA and FBI-DOJ Personnel Problems Enabled Long Series of Major Terrorist Acts to Succeed A common culture in the United States among politicians and others in government is the culture of cover-up. One recorded example of this is in the letters and faxes sent by insiders, including Stich, to people in and out of government that had a responsibility to act on the specific factual information coming from reliable sources.
