World's Worst Aviation "Terrorist" Attack in History At That Time On July 3, 1988, the sailors on the U.S. Navy ship U.S.S. Vincennes, under the command of Captain Will Rogers III, fired two radar-guided missiles at an Iranian airliner that had just departed Abadan, Iran on a daily scheduled flight on a heavily traveled civilian airway. The airliners was flying Muslim pilgrims to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. The missiles caused the airliner with 290 people on board to explode, ejecting many people out of the aircraft. Most remained alive as they waited for the fatal impact. Another U.S. warship, the frigate, U.S.S. Sides, and a nearby Italian navy vessel, confirmed that the airliner was climbing—not diving toward the Vincennes. The Captain of the USS Sides, David Carlson, would state later that the reckless shooting down of the Iranian airliner “marked the horrifying climax to Roger’s aggressiveness.” During the 1950s, Captain Rodney Stich, the main person responsible for this site, had taken off many times from the same airport, flying planeloads of Muslim pilgrims to the same holy cities of Mecca and Medina. Iranians Publicly Vowed to Retaliate For U.S. Killing 290 People Understandably, Iranians were irate at the brutal irresponsible act by the United States that killed 290 people killed in such an irresponsible manner; they publicly vowed to retaliate. They had already been greatly harmed by the subversion of their government in 1953, as personnel from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had caused the overthrow of their elected government, causing the removal of Prime Minister Mosaddegh and installation of a brutal secret police. Iranians were even more incensed when the United States refused to apologize. That failure was made worse as President Ronald Reagan justified the mass killing. Making matters even worse, as Iran mourned the mass murder of their citizens by U.S. forces, the United States widely celebrated the Fourth of July holiday the day after their nation killed 290 people. No Longer Vowing to Retaliate After Pan Am Flight 103 was Bombed Over Lockerbie After Pan Am Flight 103 was bombed out of the air, Iranian government officials no longer made any retaliation statements. Their retaliation had been accomplished with the help of a terrorist group based in Syria. U.S. Arrogant Culture in Downing Iranian Airliner Surfaced in Investigation and Prosecution Involving Pan Am Flight 103 Arrogance shown in the U.S. downing of the Iranian Airliner, killing 290 people, and decorating the murdering Navy Commander does not occur in a vacuum. Another example of U.S. arrogance occurred as U.S. Department of Justice planted bogus evidence to shift blame for the Lockerbie bombing to Libya and two Libyans, none of which had any role in the terrorist act.
